I recently got the opportunity to chop it up with up-and-coming Chicago duo, BoneLang, which consists of two artists- Samy and Matt. Earlier this year they released their EP, III’s. They recently unleashed another EP titled Black and White Photos and Pink Thread. In this exclusive interview, the duo discusses how they got into rapping, their favorite albums, Chicago food, and more. Check out the full interview below!
One Throne: How exactly did you two get into rapping?
Samy: We played in an Indi-rock band for like six years. I was always rapping at parties in high school. We started getting really serious about it in late 2013. I started putting out some songs. Everything kind of started taking off from there. Only in the last couple months has the BoneLang sound really been developed.
One Throne: Who are some of your favorite Chicago artists right now?
Samy For me, I just saw Mick Jenkins the other night and I’ve been a big fan of his for a while. Seeing him live was pretty intense. Mick Jenkins, Noname Gypsy. It’s (Chicago) is a great place to be for hip-hop.
One Throne: If you were stranded on an island for the rest of your life and could only take three albums with you, what three would you pick?
Samy: I’d pick The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me by Brand New, The Marshall Mathers LP, and Radiohead’s In Rainbows.
Matt: I’d take In Rainbows as well. Also, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy and Saxophone Colossus by Sonny Rollins.
One Throne: How did III’s come out about and what were you guys trying to accomplish with that project?
Matt: We didn’t really start with any framework for the record as a whole. We picked three songs that had a consistent message.
Samy: It’s a compilation of three different songs from three different years. Matt’s parents house, our old apartment, and our new studio is where the recordings took place. Before this we didn’t exist, so these songs are something in the vault for a while- and that’s not to stay that we weren’t excited to release them.
One Throne: What do you guys have planned for the rest of the year?
Matt: We’re going to be shooting new music videos. Our second three EP is coming soon as well titled Black and White Photos and Pink Thread. We’re going to be working on a full project as well with a lot of live elements and try to capture the live energy.
One Throne: Since you’ve known each other for so long. Does that help you music-wise or do you have a lot of disagreements?
Samy: Honestly it’s pretty easy. It’s a pretty open work space and we’re used to each other. There’s no such thing as a stupid idea and there’s not a lot of arguing.
Matt: There’s so much overlap when it comes to influences because we’ve been around each other for so long. We’ve heard all the same records. You’ll get an idea and you’ll see the idea form in the other one’s head (*laughs*).
One Throne: Time for One Throne’s random interview question…where is the best place to eat in Chicago or your “go to” place?
Samy: The Wiener’s Circle place in Lincoln Park for me.
Matt: I’m gonna go with the 24 hour burrito place! It’s not gourmet but it’s the best drunk food in the world (*laughs*).
