Now that you’ve worn out the replay button on Dee-1′s “Tha Block Is Hot” single from Sept. 15 release, Separated At Birth, take the time to see a glimpse of Dee-1′s mind in this exclusive interview. To catch you up, the NOLA rapper’s one of a kind project dropping next week takes hits you know from fellow Louisianimal Lil Wayne and in Dee-1 fashion, turns the message around tenfold. We chat with him about the process of making a song like that, the positive light he is to this industry, and more below!

__

One Throne: First of all, how did you come up with the stage name Dee-1?

Dee-1: I started rapping in college, and I went to LSU, a Division 1 school. Hence, Dee-1. Also, I’m “thee one” God chose to carry out this mission, and since my name is David, I chose to go with Dee-1. Double entendre.

__

One Throne: For those who don’t know, you were a star basketball player at the praised Ben Franklin High School in Louisiana, graduated from LSU, and were a middle school teacher; when did you have time for a rap career and where did that passion come from?

Dee-1: I didn’t start wanting to be a real rapper until my 2nd year of being a teacher. The passion came from seeing so many of my students idolize rappers. But the rappers they idolized were often leading them down the wrong path with the messages they glorified in their music.

One Throne: Your upcoming project, Separated At Birth, is somewhat a shot at fellow New Orleans rapper, Lil Wayne. What exactly is your relationship with Wayne?

Dee-1: I’ve never met Wayne since I’ve been a rapper.

__

One Throne: Tell us about spreading such a positive message in an industry where that is hardly seen?

Dee-1: That’s the only reason I’m in this game. It makes it fun for me. I love a challenge.

__

One Throne: To pull off a release like this is ingenious, what was the writing process like compared to other songs?

Dee-1: I can appreciate the lyricism of somebody like Lil Wayne, I just have a different perspective than he does on these same topics. So on this mixtape, I’m taking his topics and flipping it the way Dee-1 sees it.

__

One Throne: What has been your favorite concert experience?

Dee-1: I love every single show that I do. I promise. I feel free from the stresses of life when I’m in concert. Every time.

__

One Throne: Who is getting your vote in the 2016 presidential election?

Dee-1: It’s too early. Check back closer to the election. Right now it’s all about September 15th, Separated At Birth mixtape.

__

One Throne: Who has the album of the year so far?

Dee-1: I don’t know. Good question.

__

One Throne: Can we expect more from you in 2015 following your Sept.15 release? Any accompanying music videos?

Dee-1: Yes, I’ll be releasing about two or three music videos every month from now until the end of the year. Turn up time!! Just dropped videos for “I’m Not Perfect,” “Tha Block Is Hot,” and got “My Student Got Murdered” droppingSept 28th.

__

One Throne: And the question everyone wants to know, have you ever met Jay Electronica?

Dee-1: I have. That’s a good brother right there. I think we will collab in the year 2017. Watch.

__

One Throne: Good to connect with you Dee-1, looking forward to Separated At Birth.
